Recruiters often notice red flags during interviews, but one of the most impactful strategies you can use is thorough preparation.
For each interview, make sure to:
Research the organization: Understand the company’s mission, values, products, and services. Check recent news about the company and familiarize yourself with their industry and competitors through publications, social media handles. This shows your genuine interest and helps you tailor your responses to align with the company's goals and culture.
Read the job description carefully: Pay attention to the skills, qualifications, and responsibilities listed. This helps you tailor your resume and cover letter and prepares you to discuss how your background and skills match the specific requirements of the role. If you had applied with an outdated CV, it's important you carry/have the updated CV, cover letter.
Understand the role you’re applying for: Beyond the job description, research common expectations and challenges associated with the role. If possible, speak to current or former employees in similar positions. This allows you to ask informed questions and demonstrate a deep understanding of the role during the interview.
Bring the necessary documents: Ensure you have multiple copies(atleast 2) of your resume, a list of references, your portfolio (if applicable), and any other documents the employer requested. This shows you are organized and prepared, making a positive impression on the interviewer.
Follow the instructions provided in the interview invite email: Carefully read and adhere to any instructions given, such as the interview location, time, dress code, or any materials to bring. Following these instructions precisely demonstrates your attention to detail and respect for the interviewer’s time and processes.
